For Sri Lankan Students

University Summer Courses

Regular full-time students registered in a Bachelor or Master course who have German language proficiency equivalent to level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages or above (onDaF, TestDaF, GI-Nachweis, DSD, DSH, telc Deutsch, ÖSD) can apply for a scholarship to participate in a university summer course in Germany.

  • Eligible are:
    - Students pursuing 3-year Bachelor’s degree enrolled in 2nd year
    - Students pursuing 4-year Bachelor’s degree enrolled in 2nd or 3rd year
    - Students pursuing 2-year Master’s degree enrolled in 1st year
    - Students pursuing 5-year integrated Master’s degree enrolled in 2nd, 3rd or 4th year are eligible to apply. 3rd year students are required to submit a Letter of Confirmation from the university stating that they intend to continue their studies.
  • Students in Final Year not eligible to apply.
  • Essay Competition will not take place this year.
 
Study Visits by Groups of Foreign Students to Germany

University teacher/faculty can apply for a visit to Germany for 7-12 days with a group of minimum 10 and maximum 15 students who are in their second or higher semester of their degree programme. The programme is opened to all subject fields.

For Sri Lankan Graduates & Doctoral Students

Development-Related Postgraduate Courses - Educating Professionals for Sustainable Development (EPOS)

Graduates (4-year-bachelor degree holders/master degree holders) with at least 2 years of relevant work experience can apply for a master’s degree course in select subject areas at one of the select German universities.

 
Helmut-Schmidt-Programme (Master’s Scholarships for Public Policy and Good Governance - PPGG)

Graduate degree holders from any stream can apply for master’s course at one of the selected German Universities with the following focus areas: Public Policy, Good Governance, International Relations, Public Management, Administration, Civil Society.

 
Study Scholarship for Foreign Graduates in the Field of Architecture

Graduate degree holders to complete a course of extension studies, without gaining a formal degree or qualification, or to complete a postgraduate or Master’s degree course to gain a degree in Germany (Master’s/Diplom), at a German state (public) or state-recognised higher education institution.

 
Study Scholarship for Foreign Graduates in the Field of Music

These study scholarships aim to provide foreign applicants from the field Music with an opportunity to complete a course of extension studies, without gaining a formal degree or qualification, or to complete a postgraduate or Master’s degree course to gain a degree in Germany (Master’s/Diplom), at a German state (public) or state-recognised higher education institution.

 
Study Scholarship for Foreign Graduates in the Field of Performing Arts

These study scholarships aim to provide foreign applicants from the fields of Performing Arts (Drama, Direction, Dance, Choreography etc.) with an opportunity to complete a course of extension studies, without gaining a formal degree or qualification, or to complete a postgraduate or Master’s degree course to gain a degree in Germany (Master’s/Diplom), at a German state (public) or state-recognised higher education institution.

 
Study Scholarship for Foreign Graduates in the Field Fine Art, Film, Design/Visual Communication and Film

These study scholarships aim to provide foreign applicants from the fields of Fine Art, Design/Visual Communication and Film with an opportunity to complete a course of extension studies, without gaining a formal degree or qualification, or to complete a postgraduate or Master’s degree course to gain a degree in Germany (Master’s/Diplom), at a German state (public) or state-recognised higher education institution.

 
 
PhD Scholarships (Research Grants - Doctoral Programmes in Germany)

Scholars with master’s degree in any subjects can apply for full PhD scholarship at any university and research institutes in Germany.

 
Sandwich Model Scholarships for PhD Registered Scholars (Research Grants – Bi-nationally Supervised Doctoral Degrees)

Scholars registered for their PhD at a Sri Lankan university / research institute carry out research for their PhD thesis in Germany under the joint supervision of a Sri Lankan as well as a German professor. PhD degree to be awarded by the Sri Lankan university / institution.

For Sri Lankan Post Docs, Academicians & Senior Scientists

Research Stays for University Academics and Scientists (Forschungsaufenthalte)

University academics and scientists on active duty can apply for a stay of up to 3 months to carry out a research project at a state (public) or state recognised higher education institution or non-university research institute in Germany.

 
Study Visits for Academics - Artists and Architects

University academics on active duty can apply for a study visit of up to 3 months to carry out a research project in the fields of Architecture, Fine Art, Film, Design/Visual Communication, Performing Arts (Drama, Direction, Musicals, Dance, Performance Studies, Choreography, etc.) and Music at a state (public) or state recognised higher education institution or non-university research institute in Germany.

 
Leibniz-DAAD Research Fellowships

This programme is jointly implemented by the Leibniz Association and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). Highly-qualified, international postdoctoral researchers, who have recently completed their doctoral studies, can apply to conduct research at the Leibniz Institute of their choice in Germany.

 
DLR-DAAD Research Fellowships

This programme is jointly implemented by the Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt (DLR) and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). Highly-qualified international doctoral and postdoctoral students as well as senior scientists can apply to conduct research at the institutes of the DLR in Germany.

 
Visiting Professorships (Gastdozenturen)

University academics on active duty can apply to teach at a German university for a minimum of one and maximum of four semesters. The German host university needs to apply.

For Sri Lankan Alumni

Re-invitation Programme for Former Scholarship Holders (Wiedereinladungen)

Former DAAD scholarship holders who received funding for a minimum of six months and former scholarship holders who had studied in East Germany (GDR) for at least one year, and are on active duty can carry out a research project at a state (public) or state recognised higher education institution or non-university research institute in Germany.

 
Scientific Literature Programme (Book Grants)

Former one-year scholarship holders of all disciplines (as well as former German studies scholarship holders who received support for at least 5 months) can apply once a year for specialist literature (books, journals, articles) produced by German publishers to help them advance their academic knowledge and qualifications (maximum value of € 200 per year).

 
Small Equipment Programme

One-year scholarship holders, especially those from the fields of engineering, technology and science and from the agricultural and forestry sciences, who received DAAD support for a period of 10 or more months can apply for a grant towards for purchase of small equipment and materials. The application deadline ends 8 weeks before the scholarship period is completed. Applications can be made for the purchase of small equipment and material of direct relevance to projects carried out at the German university. Purchase of the following is absolutely excluded from this programme: Video, photo and office equipment (eg, photocopiers and computers, including software and accessories).

 
Material Resources Programme

Scientists or alumni of German institutions of higher education who have  returned to their home country and are active at an institution of higher education or comparable academic institution can apply for scientific equipment for carrying out their current teaching and research projects. There are two application categories, viz. small-scale projects (up to € 3,500) and large-scale projects (from € 3,500 to € 20,000).

 
Academic Events by Alumni

DAAD alumni can apply for funding to organise academic events like workshops, conferences and seminars. The events should involve a substantial number of DAAD alumni. The DAAD grant can cover travel, accommodation and boarding expenses for DAAD alumni as well as resource persons and general costs related to the event. Third party funding generated by the organiser and personal financial contribution of the participants towards the event are important.

German universities too have their own scholarships that they advertise on their websites as and when available.
